Job Summary
Set-up and troubleshoot CNC mills and lathes to machine products to meet dimensional and finish requirements. Edit and develop programs and/or manually program at the machine control to obtain desired part form and finish while meeting quality and productivity standards. Participate with Engineering Department on launch of new products and major process changes.
Essential Functions:
1. Shop floor support
- Troubleshooting daily with production supervisor, setup people, operators, and manufacturing engineer to assure machines running smooth with capable processes.
- Ensures correct work-holding, cutting tools, tool holders and gauges are setup correctly and properly used.
- Works with repair contractors and machine manufacturers for proper machine repairs.
- Works with production supervisor and production manager to assure line items are shipped on-time and prioritize late line items.
- Works with manufacturing engineering on new products to assure process is setup to meet throughput and scrap targets and reductions then document and provide information used to generate accurate setup sheets, tools lists, and process routers.
- Works with maintenance department to minimize down time with a priority on bottleneck machines.
- Provides input to production and manufacturing engineering pertaining to any equipment that needs to be replaced or new capacity to be acquired.
- Works with OEM for training on new equipment purchase and maintenance of existing equipment.
- Analyze quality problems to find root cause and put corrective actions in place.
- Work with Production Supervisor on improving productivity and utilization of machines and operators.
- Conduct cycle time studies and identify areas of improvement.
- Run production and complete machine setups.
- Continuous improvement of existing products.
2. Ensures all parts are to the required specifications by:
- Maintaining and continuously improving the quality of parts produced while finding ways to reduce scrap.
- Reading blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work pieces, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
- Verifying conformance of finished work piece specifications.
- Complying with all work instructions.
- Following and maintaining ISO/AS requirements and Schafer procedures.
- Completing Schafer’s quality certification requirements for assigned area.
3. Ensure the operational effectiveness of all assigned equipment by:
- Conducting all assigned and necessary preventative maintenance procedures.
- Starting and observing machine operations to detect malfunctions or out of tolerance machining and adjusting machine controls or control media as required. Installing tooling into machines and equipment and testing operation of unit to ensure functionality and performance.
- Conferring with engineers, production personnel, programmers, or others to resolve machining problems, and assist in developing PM procedures.
4. Responsible for supporting the Schafer Business Process by:
- Maintaining productivity of assigned machines.
- Measuring, marking, and scribing dimensions and reference points on material or work piece as guides for subsequent machining.
- Continuously find methods to improve tool costs without sacrificing quality or productivity.
- Reducing downtime of machines setups.
- Preparing tooling, fixtures, workpiece, gages, etc. for jobs located in que at assigned machines.
- Maintaining the 6S program in assigned area. Keep working areas cleaned and organized.
5. Contributes to the overall effectiveness of the company by:
- Channeling problems and/or complaints to appropriate person for resolution.
- Supporting all Schafer policies and procedures.
- Reporting to Supervisor when assignments cannot be completed.
- Providing input and assistance with the implementation of quality improvements.
- Resolving problems.
- Performing other job-related duties as required.
- Helping evaluate job applicant’s knowledge for the cell prior to Schafer hiring.
- Passing along vital information for subsequent shifts.
- Training new personnel in the operation of assigned machines.
- Cross-Train other department employees.
- Participate in company safety programs, near miss, SWEEPs, etc.
- Work and train employees on machine setup, Machine PM, Gaging, QA Documents and Procedures.
- Train in other machining departments as needed.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- Requires physical ability and stamina to perform the essential functions of the position, including the ability to walk, stand, lift, carry up to 50 pounds, push, kneel, bend, stoop, reach over and under waist level, twist for extended periods of time on cement or other hard surfaces, etc.
- Demonstrates the verbal and written communication skills necessary to complete forms and take messages in a legible, accurate manner.
- Two-year certification from technical school or two plus years of experience in setup and operation of mills/lathes or related field.
- Must be able to communicate in English.
- Ability to use a computer.

Working Conditions:
- Air conditioned/heated manufacturing facility with possible exposure to noise; dust; fumes; physical, chemical, and biohazards; solvents, oils, and detergents.
- This job is to be performed at the designated facility 100% of the time unless directed otherwise by manager/supervisor.
